The Atlantik Wall In Normandy |

Wn25 Le Polygone This site is really interesting, it was possibly a French hill fort dating from much earlier times. The German's as usual modified the position to suit their needs. They installed five Tobruks of the type vf58c 81mm mortars and also a 5cm concrete gun position. There is also a remarkable concrete trench type gun position (pic 5 & 6) with a pin which I suppose was to steady the gun. This type of position is new to me in Normandy. You can still also find evidence of the trench system linking the positions. The site seems to have taken quite a lot of punishment, and as I can find no evidence of the battle passing through this area. I can only think that the American bombing on the morning of D-day found its mark. |
